Rudy Giuliani was once revered by politicians (Democrat and Republican) for rooting out mob corruption as a New York prosecutor and holding the NYC together through our country’s worst tragedy in the 9/11 terrorist attacks as the city’s mayor. Now his name is in the headlines as his former associate Lev Parnas has been releasing statements and evidence that points in the democrat’s favor for impeachment since his arrest two months ago. Giuliani has been the centerpiece in the House of Representative’s impeachment inquiry and now in the Senate’s current trail. These accusations are no longer alleged because he himself has admitted to conducting an investigation with foreign governments at the behest of President Donald Trump to root out corruption. He has stated that he has overwhelming evidence that points to Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden receiving bribed funds through his appointment to a Ukrainian energy firm Burisma Holdings the largest private oil and gas extracting company in Ukraine. In 2015 the U.K.’s Serious Fraud Office (SFO) blocked accounts of Burisma’s majority shareholder Mykola Zlochevskiy on belief that his assets were unlawfully acquired as the result of misconduct while in public office. The charges were dropped due to “unsufficient evidence.” The damage was done, Burisma now carried the stigma of being a corrupt company and Joe’s son Hunter was appointed to their board within the next year. This happened within three months of Hunter being dishonorably discharged from the Navy for testing positive for cocaine. Throughout the next couple years Joe Biden continued his work to root out corruption in Ukraine, he considered this to be his greatest accomplishment while in office as Vice President.
Now I must admit that Biden’s son’s dealings in Ukraine are a conflict of interest but this still doesn’t negate the fact that Trump and his team are using back channels off the record to influence foreign Governments. The Democrats have presented evidence and testimony of public service officers that were told that Giuliani was in contact with the Ukrainians pressuring them to open an investigation into the Bidens and Burisma. They also allegedly were told to run all interactions with Ukraine through Giuliani. This ruffled the feathers of many seasoned officials such as Bill Taylor (Former Trump appointed Ambassador to Ukraine) and Marie Yavonovich (Former Ambassador to Ukraine) who both testified in the House Impeachment inquiries. They both stated that Giuliani’s involvement was “irregular” and gave them both reason for concern. The pivot point to the entire impeachment inquiry isn’t just Giuliani’s irregular involvement, it is that the backchannel was used to pressure Ukraine by leveraging money for defense against the Ukrainians so that in return they would announce publicly an investigation into the Bidens. This is the crux that holds together the first Article of Impeachment, Abuse of Power.
Giuliani himself is the face of Trump’s legal team as his private lawyer not a public service officer whose duty it is to protect the constitution and American’s liberties. His motives can not be tracked because this is all private information that the President is withholding under attorney client privilege. Frankly, if Trump wanted to investigate the Bidens and make a real case he needed to bring in the Department of Justice to legitimize it. The issue is the D.O.J. and other respected intelligence agencies like the C.I.A have already looked into this years ago and found no evidence to support these claims calling them nothing more than a “conspiracy theory” to used their terminology. It is also curious that this is the same unfounded theory that Putin ran through Russian state T.V. as propaganda for the Ukrainians to look corrupt and unstable.
This article isn’t meant to sway anyone on either side of the Impeachment podium but it is meant to try to establish a base of what is acceptable for foreign diplomacy especially for governments that are in crisis and need for stabilization like Ukraine. Our support for Ukraine to have a free and fair Democratic state in the face of Russian aggression is paramount in the region. Nevertheless, we can still catch Giuliani on prime time Fox News a couple times a month rambling aimlessly and honestly hurting much of Trump’s credibility. His cringe worthy interviews could be called unhinged to say the least but his claims are borderline slanderous at times which fit in well with the Fox News’s agenda of attacking first and piling on until the viewer is confused. My biggest fear is that our credibility with our allies dwindles because of policies like this and anytime our bonds with our allies is at risk our enemies get stronger. Giuliani has become the face of Trump’s biggest hypocrisy, a leader who says he works for the people against corruption yet from what I have seen is a corrupt President whose personal interests dwarf those of the people. There is a new swamp in Washington and the lead ghoul is Rudy Giuliani.
